PXE problem – WDS don’t start

Recently I was troubleshooting a PXE problem on a SCCM 2012 R2 DP. The Windows Deployment Service didn’t start. Checked the servers Application Event log and found the following errors.

EventID: 513
Source: WDSServer
Message: An error occurred while trying to initialize provider WDSDCMGR from C:\Windows\system32\wdsdcmgr.dll. Windows Deployment Services server will be shutdown. Error Information: 0xC1030104
EventID: 257
Source: WDSServer
Message: An error occurred while trying to start the Windows Deployment Services server. Error Information: 0xC1030104

The following solved the problem…

  1. Disable PXE / wait until WDS is uninstalled
  2. Remove boot images
  3. Delete C:\Windows\Temp\*.*
  4. Reboot
  5. Delete D:\RemoteInstall
  6. Reboot
  7. Add PXE support on the DP (WDS install automatically)
  8. Reboot
  9. Distribute boot images again
  10. Restart WDS
